Stacey Abrams lost her 2018 bid for the Georgia governorship in a contentious race against then Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp. Despite acknowledging Kemp as the legal victor, Abrams has refused to concede the election.
Abrams said, “Concession in the political space is an acknowledgment that the process was fair … and I don’t believe that to be so.” News Forecasters asks, is Stacey Abrams just a sore loser? And what are the ramification to the democratic process, when elections are delegitimized?
Abrams’ claims that the then Secretary of State BrianKemp had carried out mass purges of the voter rolls, ostensibly to remove dead people and people who haven’t voted in recent elections from the records, but in such a sweeping way that Democrats fear it will keep voters, particularly minority voters, off the rolls. To Abrams, evidently, only minorities die and have irregular voting patterns.
On the other side of this debate is voter ID laws – click here for the current status of voter ID laws in the U.S. Research shows that voter fraud is uncommon in American elections. An investigation conducted by Loyola Law School, Los Angeles professor Justin Levitt found 31 credible incidents of voter fraud in over 1 billion ballots cast during general, primary, special, and municipal elections from 2000 through 2014. However, around 75% of Americans favored requiring all voters to show government-issued photo IDs, according to a 2018 Pew Research Center pre-election survey.
Many feel that voter bias has already been baked into the cake for decades via legal and illegal immigration. Since the passing of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, it has open the gates for legal immigration – approximately 59 million. Though officially illegal immigration is said to be around 11 million, some claim that illegal immigration is as high as 30 million. The point here is that immigrants overwhelmingly vote left, to get more benefits from left-leaning policies – as they often tend to be financially less well off.
But perhaps there is even something more disturbing recently happening. Dr. Robert Epstein, who earned his Ph.D. in psychology from Harvard University made quite the explosive claim, “That level of [silicon valley tech] bias was sufficient, I calculated, to have shifted over time somewhere between 2.6 and 10.4 million votes to Hillary without anyone knowing that this had occurred.” If true, this would make all election outcomes dubious at best.
News Forecasters will let you decide if Stacy Abrams is a sore loser, we want to address the more serious issue of delegitimized elections. If people feel that elections are rigged, the government loses its legitimacy. If governments lose their legitimacy, who will obey its laws? Or they may do everything possible to circumvent the laws – political anarchy ensues, and the people become ungovernable. This is why in the past civil concessions when politicians lose an election was deemed so critical. This is changing. Stacy Abrams is a trailblazer in this new phenomenon.
Going forward, politicians will increasingly refuse to concede for a variety of reasons – further weakening the democratic processes in America. Delegitimizing elections becomes a new viable weapon when governing as the opposition party. A weakened America on the global stage may have profound effects on the world’s geopolitics into what could be a very dark the future.
