Sexual moral norms – as prophesied from Sodom and Gomorrah?

Sodom And Gomorrah

Sodom and Gomorrah were two cities mentioned in the Book of Genesis and throughout the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament, and in the deuterocanonical books, as well as in the Quran and the hadith. The example of Sodom and Gomorrah are mentioned by some, in how moral depravity get’s so bad that a god has to come in and destroy the society in an effort to restart on a better footing. There were many “so-called” sins described in the story, but we will focus on the sexual ones, as this seems to be where people focus on the most.

For those that are non-religious, you don’t have to believe in religious texts literally. The story was written by men and can be taken metaphorically (or even fictional commentary) to show natural progressions of moral norms in society. Furthermore, this article is not to judge these moral norms. We merely want to use the story to show what is possible in societal norms. Somebody has already thought about this 1000s of years ago – we can all learn something – so please do cut us a little slack here.

Please read the full Sodom and Gomorrah story in the Bible in the book of Genesis 19, to get a little background. We will layout each societal norm identified in this Biblical text and their adoption into our society today:

Homosexuality – In Genisis 19:3 it states, “all the men from every part of the city of Sodom both young and old surrounded the house … called to Lot [and demanded], Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”

In 2012, former President Barack Obama became the first sitting U.S. commander-in-chief to publicly voice his support for same-sex marriage. Three years later, the Supreme Court officially made marriage equality the law of the land. This has been similar to other countries around the world. This for most is settled, and for those that do not accept this will be viewed as bigoted.

Arranged relationships – In Genisis 19:14 it states, “So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters.”

In Western culture, arranged marriages are not common anymore, though societal pressures do exist in some circles. For the rest of the world arranged marriages, even forced relationships are the norm. Keep in mind if you are living in the West, the rest of the world is much more significant in terms of population size. This practice has been around for a long time.

Incest – In Genisis 19:33 it states, “That night they got their father to drink wine, and the older daughter went in and slept with him.”

Incest is, indeed common – 43% of child sexual abuse is perpetrated by family members, and it is the most commonly cited form of child abuse. Around 55% of British Pakistanis are married to their cousins. In a recent TV series, “Game of Thrones,” incest was normalized. Others in society suggest it is not as bad as we are lead to believe.

Pedophilia – In Genisis 19:6 it states, “Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them.” Most young women at that time married early. The implication here is, since they were yet married, they, in fact, were underage.

Pedophilia today is highly illegal. But many believe that this barrier will be coming down soon. There are some efforts underway to decriminalize pedophilia. Some people are already questioning whether this taboo will also fall. News Forecasters believes this may happen in the next 5 to 10 years, though it may have some initial limitations – above the age of puberty.

Rape – Yes, we said rape – got your attention yet? Please re-read Genisis 19:3. It stated, “all the men from every part of the city of Sodom both young and old.” This is not date rape, a man corralling a woman alone, or a rapist hiding in the bushes jumping out attacking their victim. It was a mob. Furthermore, they waited outside overnight to have their opportunity. The city had no local authorities to stop it – rape obviously was legal and allowed in this community.

After the recent #metoo movement, rape seems very far away. But according to the Sodom and Gomorrah story, it may become a reality. Most likely it will be sold with this idea that if you refuse me, you hate who I am, making you intolerant and a bigot.

So to answer the question, what comes next in Sodom and Gomorrah? The answer is pedophilia and then rape.  Again, whether you agree or disagree – please don’t shoot the messenger.

As a footnote for the Biblical end of the world conspiracy theorists, Luke 17:28-30 has a New Testament reference to Sodom and Gomorrah. It implies that at the end of man’s time and god returns to earth, the sexual moral norms will be like in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah. Well, this is good news – we may have more time. Not all the norms described in Sodom and Gomorrah have happened … yet. Just saying …
